Why we love the South Carolina Mustard BBQ sauce

The origins of the South Carolina Mustard BBQ sauce

It is a little bit difficult to find the origins of this popular BBQ sauce, since it has a pretty long history. One thing seems to be sure: it has a German heritage and it was brought to America by German immigrants during the 18th century. Mustard played a vital role in their cuisine, especially in outdoors cooking. Unlike other typical red or brown BBQ sauces (which are generally based on ketchup or tomato sauce), the South Carolina BBQ sauce has a yellow color due to its mustard content. Some sources argue that this sauce actually started its journey from North Carolina, but it is probably too late to figure out the truth. It is not that important anyway. The point is that we have this special BBQ sauce with a beautiful yellow color and with a savor so delicious that it would be a sin not to try it at least once in a lifetime. The most popular meat we use it together with is pork, especially pulled pork.

  1. A simple recipe

Here is a quite simple recipe for South Carolina Mustard BBQ sauce, which only takes about half an hour to make and gives you 10-20 portions. Take a pan and bland together the following ingredients in it: mustard (3/4 cup), cider vinegar (3/4 cup), 1 tablespoon brown sugar, one and half tablespoons butter, 2 teaspoons salt, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, one and a quarter teaspoons black pepper and two teaspoons of Louisiana hot sauce. Cook this mixture on low temperature for about half an hour. Don’t use it until it is perfectly cool.

  1. Another recipe with some changes

As you probably know already if you have ever searched after food recipes, there are always several different ways of preparing the same food, depending on local ingredients or simply the different taste of different people. This recipe is similar to the first one, but it has some modifications. This time you will need the following ingredients: 3/4 cup mustard, half cup honey, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 30 ml ketchup, 15 ml brown sugar, 30 ml Worcestershire sauce and one teaspoon of hot sauce. Simply blend them together and your sauce is ready, no cooking is needed here. Prepare it one day before you want to use it, this way it will taste perfectly. If you pour it into a jar, it can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

  1. Mustard BBQ sauce with beer

The secret of this last recipe is beer, let’s see how it works! Combine these ingredients in a pan: one and half cup mustard, half cup brown sugar, 3/4 cup cider vinegar, 3/4 cup beer, 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1-1 tablespoon black and white pepper, half teaspoon cayenne pepper, one and half teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons butter, one and half teaspoons liquid smoke and one teaspoon hot sauce. Cook it for 40 minutes and it’s ready to use!

Top Latin BBQ recipes for you

Is there such thing as typical Latin cuisine?

When we hear the expression “Latin cuisine”, it is quite hard to think about only one or two typical dishes. This can be due to the fact that this kind of cuisine has been influenced by so many different yet similar cultures that it is not easy to highlight anything specific. Still, we can try to collect some typical traits and ingredients, such as different kinds of salsas, corn, tomato, guacamole, tacos or tortillas. After this short list we can ask the question: how can these dishes be combined with BQQ and best indoor grill for steak? How is it possible to combine these two different worlds? Well, let’s find it out by looking at some Latin BBQ recipes.

  1. Salad with tomato and avocado

There is no BBQ without salad, unless you like eating meat by itself. Therefore we picked a delicious salad to start this list with which is very easy to make, so it is perfect for beginners. First you should prepare the dressing: mix together white vinegar, salt and pepper, olive oil, cilantro and lime juice. When it is done, continue with the salad itself. Cut some big pieces of tomato, avocado, cucumber and onion, and layer them in a big salad bowl. Pour the dressing to the top and serve immediately.

  1. Colombian hot dogs

Who doesn’t like hot dogs? There is no such person (probably). It is one of the first dishes that pop into your mind when you think about BBQ, isn’t it? Not only because it is so tasty, but also because it is so simple that it’s impossible to ruin it. This kind of hot dog is slightly more complicated than the ones you can buy on the street, but this shouldn’t scare you away from trying to make it at home. First of all, pour some pineapple juice into a pan, along with sugar and lemon juice and cook it slowly for like 15 minutes. Add a blend of cornstarch and one tablespoon water to the mixture, then boil it for about 10 minutes. Wait until it gets cool. Now you can make your hot dogs as you like them: buns, hot dog, the pineapple sauce you have just made, ketchup, mustard, mayo, coleslaw and anything that you consider useful and tasty here.

  1. Grilled Mexican street corn

Another simple and convenient choice for BBQ beginners is grilled corn, which is a very popular street food in Mexico. Before grilling the corn, cook it in the microwave for about 5 minutes. During this time you can prepare the dressing of sour cream, mayo, salt and cumin. Grill the corn for 10-15 minutes. Now put a corn holder into each piece, then distribute the sauce on their surface, and strew some grated cheese and chili powder to the top. It is ready to serve now, along with lime wedges on the side of your plate. Make sure you eat it while it is still hot, especially if you want the melted cheese to stay soft and creamy.

Slow cooker barbecue ribs recipes for you

What is a slow cooker?

It is not very difficult to figure out from the name what a slow cooker is. This kind of kitchen appliance is used for cooking a little bit below 100 °C, which is lower than average cooking temperature. This way the food gets done during several hours, and it gives you the opportunity to leave the pot unsupervised, instead of standing in the kitchen until the meal is ready. Isn’t it convenient? You can make several different dishes this way, including stews, soups, and even desserts.

Barbecuing inside the house

In the case you don’t have a grill that you could use for barbecuing outside, you can still enjoy a portion of delicious barbecue ribs; the same applies when there is snow or rain outside, which makes grilling impossible. You can deal with these situations easily with the help of a slow cooker! Here are some great, simple recipes for making barbecue ribs in your kitchen.

  1. Slow cooker barbecue ribs: a basic recipe

For this recipe, you will need about 2 kilograms pork ribs. Spice them with salt and pepper, and toss them into a preheated oven (around 200 °C) for 30 minutes (turn them over at half-time). While they are in the oven, you can prepare the barbecue sauce. Take 2 cups ketchup, half cup brown sugar, 1 cup chili sauce, 2 teaspoons oregano, 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, 4 tablespoons vinegar and some hot sauce, salt, and pepper. Put the ribs in the slow cooker, then pour the sauce on them. Cover the pot, and cook the dish for approximately 6-8 hours. It will be enough for 8 persons.

  1. Slow cooker barbecue ribs with tomato sauce

This one is also a quite basic recipe, but it is for 12 persons (since you will be using 2,5-3 kilogram pork ribs for it), and the sauce is a little bit different from the first one. Moreover, you don’t need to cook the meat in the oven beforehand. For the sauce, mix together the following ingredients: 8-deciliter tomato sauce, 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, 2 and a half ounces brown sugar, 15 ml soy sauce, 15 ml chili powder, 1 teaspoon paprika, 2 teaspoons cumin, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, some salt, and pepper. The rest of the instructions are identical with the one in the first recipe (although you can make one modification: instead of cooking it for 6-8 hours on low temperature, choose a higher temperature and reduce the cooking time to 3-4 hours instead).

tomato Sauce

  1. Slow cooker barbecue ribs with cola and smoke

To make a very special sauce for your ribs, stir together half cup cola, a quarter cup brown sugar, some salt, and pepper, 2 chopped garlic cloves, 3 tablespoons liquid smoke and one chopped onion. Pour it on the meat and cook it for 8-9 hours (get rid of the rest of the sauce at the end). Pour one and a half cup barbecue sauce on the ribs and cook it for another hour. You will get four servings at the end.

How to win a BBQ competition

Amateur or professional barbecuing?

When you decide to take up barbecuing as a hobby, you probably don’t even think about competitions at first. You just want to cook something outside, alone or with your family or friends. Once you get the hang of it, you might feel the need the test your knowledge and abilities at some point. You may even want to compete with others who are into BBQ as much as you are. But do you know where and how to start? If not, don’t worry, just keep reading!

BBQ Competi

  1. Previous research

The first step is to gather as much information as possible. Get familiar with the competition’s rule book in great details: keep in mind that breaking the rules will probably end your participation in the race, and you will leave the venue with some pretty bad memories. The rule book should not be the only literature you read though. Visit your local library and find some books about BBQ competitions (if you don’t find any, just ask the librarian). Do some online research about the topic, you will be surprised how many useful links you can find, from articles to videos. Another good idea is to find online barbecuing communities: blogs and forums, where you can discuss any BBQ related issues with people with the same interest.

  1. BBQ day and night!

Once you’re done with step one, you can continue with step two (or perhaps you can do these two steps simultaneously). The best way of preparing for your competition is to go through the race step by step. Cook the same dish that you are planning to do at the completion day, in the exact same sequence. This way you will get some routine by the contest, which is especially important for those who are preparing for their very first competition. A good advice here: try to concentrate on one kind of dish, and improve your skills of making this meal, instead of trying to be good at everything (which is impossible anyway).

  1. Make a detailed plan for the trip

This might seem like an unnecessary kind of advice, but it is not. Being well prepared reduces the risk of something unexpected to happen, which reduces the stress you have to face with. If you need to travel out of town for the contest, plan your car trip (or train, bus, plane trip) in detail. In the case the venue is more than just a few hours from your home, you will also need some accommodation. Search for nearby housing in time, since other out-of-towners will do the same, and if you don’t act in time, you will risk not having a room where you can survive the night.

  1. Check your equipment beforehand

At this point, you already know that without proper equipment, failing would be granted. Make a detailed list of everything you will need, and check every item before leaving for the race. Of course, you have to make sure that you only bring what is really necessary in order to reduce chaos.

How to make your grill non stick

Summer means grilling time!

What are the great things about summer? Going to the beach, camping in nature, eating ice cream, turning off the heat in the house or something else? For some of us, summer primarily means going outside with proper equipment and starting to grill. Grilling combines together some really great things: fresh air, food, creativity and having fun with others (provided that we have some company, of course). Those who have already discovered this hobby would probably warn you about one very annoying issue: a sticky grill! This should not be something that ruins the fun of grilling since it is quite easy to deal with it. Here are some tips and tricks how to avoid a sticky grill.

  1. Clean your grill

This might seem like obvious things to do, but many people simply forget to clean their grill on a regular basis. Instead of cleaning it after your food is done, you can do it before using it next time. Before cleaning your PG24 Pellet Grill and Smoker apparatus, it is a good idea to heat it up first (it shouldn’t be very hot though, 10-15 minutes of heating will be enough). This way the food remains on the grill become ashy and hard, which is more easy to clean up than sticky food leftovers. You can easily do this with a proper grill brush (or maybe a piece of aluminum foil if you don’t have a brush). A good advice about cleaning your grill: do it before each time you start cooking, not just every once in a while, when it is already so dirty that it bothers you a lot. It is a lot easier to do some minor cleaning each time than to spend long hours trying to get rid of the huge mess that has gathered on the device.

  1. What to pay attention to while grilling

You can keep your grill cleaner by observing a couple ground rules during the grilling process. First of all, never place the meat on a cold grill, only when it is already hot. You can use a very high temperature in the first few minutes, then you can turn it down a bit (depending on the recipe). Before putting down the meat on the grill, make sure you have used some oil first, which also helps prevent stickiness.

Grill pan

  1. Wait with turning the food over

Once the meat (or other kind of meal) is on the grill, don’t try to flip it over too soon. It won’t get ready faster if you try to rush it, it will simply mess up your grill again. If you attempt to turn it over and it doesn’t work, it means the food needs more time, and you should leave it there for a few more minutes. Although if you started cooking with a dirty grill, it will be sticky no matter what, even when the meat is otherwise ready to turn over. That is why you should always start the whole grilling process with step 1!

How to make burgers using your BBQ grill

Homemade burgers – are they really better?

Making an internet search with the word “burger” will result in hundreds (if not thousands) of homemade burger recipes. How is it possible? How can they be so popular while we can buy them in countless fast food places? Isn’t it easier that way? Yes, it is definitely easier to buy some fast food while going home from work, instead of using all that time preparing them ourselves. But if we compare fast food with home cooking, this might be its only advantage. Just think about it: making your own food is almost always cheaper than buying something out. Besides, it is healthier as well, that’s for sure. So isn’t your health and money worth preserving with just a little bit extra time and effort? If your answer is yes, keep reading, and you will find some great recipes for burgers made on the BBQ grill.

When I was looking for a pellet grill for my own use, I found this resource (https://solidgoldeats.com/best-pellet-smoker-grill-reviews/) on SolidGoldEats, that I highly recommend. Check it out if you’re looking for a pellet smoker.

  1. Turkey burgers on grill

Making this burger will only take half an hour from your day, which is really not such a long time. To make the burgers you need to blend well together with the followings: minced turkey, bread crumbs, egg whites, chopped onion, chopped parsley, chopped garlic along with some salt and pepper. Place the pieces for grilling on a charcoal grill and leave them there for about 15 minutes, using medium temperature. Don’t forget to turn them over at half-time! Once they are done, you can prepare the hamburgers: hamburger bun, meat, tomato, lettuce or anything else that you like.

  1. Yummy salmon burgers

This kind of burger is even healthier than the first one! What will you need to make it? Canned salmon, eggs, minced onion, parsley, bread crumbs, basil, lemon juice, red pepper flakes and some salt. Blend them well, form them into thin patties, then place them on a hot grill for like 10 minutes (again, don’t forget the half-time turning). While they are on the grill device, you will have time to prepare the sauce. Take some lemon juice, basil, and mayo, blend them well and it is ready to use. Follow the instructions above in order to make your burgers.

  1. Grilled chicken pineapple sliders

This burger combines the taste of Hawaii with healthy chicken breast, which makes it a perfect choice for those on a diet. It takes more time to make them than the first two burgers (more than an hour actually), but the result will compensate you for sure. Start with preparing the house for the chicken. Mix the juice of lemon and lime, cider vinegar, salt, and pepper, and place the meat in the liquid for about an hour (put it in the fridge, it’s even better that way). Afterward, place the pieces of chicken on hot grill, and roast them for 5-10 minutes, turning them over at half-time. Grill some pineapple rings for a few minutes until they are slightly brown. Now it’s time to create the burgers: toasted rolls in half with teriyaki sauce spread on it, lettuce, chicken, pineapple, onion and a half roll again.

The best equipment for winners

In order to succeed in this area, you must have appropriate and well-functioning tools. The most important one among these is definitely the grill itself. One of the best choices here is an electric smoker. Electric smokers make barbecuing easier than any other machines do. They don’t require any supervision and control during the whole cooking process, which makes them perfect for forgetful cooks. In addition to this, they are very easy to keep clean. It might not be the cheapest choice to purchase an electric smoker, but if you are planning to do barbecuing for a longer period, it is definitely worth investing some money in a good and strong machine. Benefits will exceed the costs for sure, especially for pros who want to achieve the best possible result at a BBQ competition.

Which one is the best electric smoker on the market?

Well, there is no clear answer to this question. We probably don’t have similar priorities about these machines, and if one of them is perfect for someone, it doesn’t mean it is perfect for everyone. Besides, each of them have upsides and downsides, so it is up to you to decide which one is the perfect choice for you. We would like to introduce you this great electric smoker which we think might be the best solution for you. First of all, you can always take a look at the meat inside due to its viewing window and the internal light. It comes with a remote control, which will make it super easy to handle its temperature, even if you are 30 meters away from the grill. The machine includes four racks, leaving lots of space for basically any kind of food you choose to cook. The water pan inside gives you the opportunity to spice up the dish with liquids, and with the air damper you can vary the level of smoke, too. The electric smoker works with wood chips that you can load in on the side of the machine, so you don’t even have to open its door, letting temperature and smoke run away.
