Creating your own barbecue sauce
Have you ever dreamed about making your own barbecue sauce, instead of buying some expensive and unhealthy one from the supermarket? Well, you should have. It is not difficult to create a delicious sauce in your own kitchen, which is better for your health and your budget. Besides, it doesn’t even take such a long time as you might think, so it is really worth the effort. We have collected some great recipes for homemade barbecue sauce which are easy to create, and they will definitely make you forget those bottled sauces at the store.
- Basic barbecue sauce
We should start with the basics. It will take around 15 minutes to get ready with this sauce, which is quite a short time, isn’t it? You will need the following ingredients for the recipe: 2 ounces cider vinegar, 2 ounces Worcestershire sauce, 2 ounces brown sugar, 16 ounces ketchup, 30 ml molasses, 30 ml mustard, 15 ml Tabasco sauce and some black pepper. Stir together all of them in a saucepan until it is boiling, then reduce the temperature and leave the pan on the heat for about 10 more minutes. If you put the sauce to the fridge, you can store it there for months.
- Kansas City-style barbecue sauce
This recipe is slightly more complicated than the previous one and it takes more time to make it, but there is no reason to worry. It won’t take more than one hour from your busy day and you don’t need to be a master chef to prepare it. Take 2 tablespoons butter and melt it in a pan. Put one cup chopped onion in it and cook it for 5 minutes. Add some chopped garlic and cook it for 30 seconds. Now add the rest of the ingredients: 16 ounces ketchup, 2 and a half ounces molasses, 2 and a half ounces brown sugar, 2 and a half ounces apple cider vinegar, 30 ml mustard, 15 ml chili powder plus some black pepper and cayenne pepper (15-30 ml). Mix them well, boil the sauce and cook it on low temperature for about half an hour, while you stir it frequently. After it is completely cool, you can put it in a jar and store it in the fridge for one month (you will have approximately 20 ounces sauce). You can use it for several different dishes, including ribs, chicken or even beans.
We left something special and sweet to the end of the list. If you like stepping away from conventions every once in a while, don’t miss the opportunity to create this fruity sauce. The instructions are identical to the ones for Kansas City-style sauce, but you will need to modify the ingredients a bit. Replace ketchup with tomato sauce, add 12 ounces cherries, 2 and a half ounces orange juice, 10 ml salt, use white pepper instead of black, use 5 ounces brown sugar instead of 2 and a half, and 2 ounces molasses instead of 2 and a half.
