Is there such thing as typical Latin cuisine?
When we hear the expression “Latin cuisine”, it is quite hard to think about only one or two typical dishes. This can be due to the fact that this kind of cuisine has been influenced by so many different yet similar cultures that it is not easy to highlight anything specific. Still, we can try to collect some typical traits and ingredients, such as different kinds of salsas, corn, tomato, guacamole, tacos or tortillas. After this short list we can ask the question: how can these dishes be combined with BQQ and grill? How is it possible to combine these two different worlds? Well, let’s find it out by looking at some Latin BBQ recipes.
- Salad with tomato and avocado
There is no BBQ without salad, unless you like eating meat by itself. Therefore we picked a delicious salad to start this list with which is very easy to make, so it is perfect for beginners. First you should prepare the dressing: mix together white vinegar, salt and pepper, olive oil, cilantro and lime juice. When it is done, continue with the salad itself. Cut some big pieces of tomato, avocado, cucumber and onion, and layer them in a big salad bowl. Pour the dressing to the top and serve immediately.
- Colombian hot dogs
Who doesn’t like hot dogs? There is no such person (probably). It is one of the first dishes that pop into your mind when you think about BBQ, isn’t it? Not only because it is so tasty, but also because it is so simple that it’s impossible to ruin it. This kind of hot dog is slightly more complicated than the ones you can buy on the street, but this shouldn’t scare you away from trying to make it at home. First of all, pour some pineapple juice into a pan, along with sugar and lemon juice and cook it slowly for like 15 minutes. Add a blend of cornstarch and one tablespoon water to the mixture, then boil it for about 10 minutes. Wait until it gets cool. Now you can make your hot dogs as you like them: buns, hot dog, the pineapple sauce you have just made, ketchup, mustard, mayo, coleslaw and anything that you consider useful and tasty here.
- Grilled Mexican street corn
Another simple and convenient choice for BBQ beginners is grilled corn, which is a very popular street food in Mexico. Before grilling the corn, cook it in the microwave for about 5 minutes. During this time you can prepare the dressing of sour cream, mayo, salt and cumin. Grill the corn for 10-15 minutes. Now put a corn holder into each piece, then distribute the sauce on their surface, and strew some grated cheese and chili powder to the top. It is ready to serve now, along with lime wedges on the side of your plate. Make sure you eat it while it is still hot, especially if you want the melted cheese to stay soft and creamy.
